“IOWA! IOWA!”
Apparently, that was our name.
Rhonda had barely spoken with them — just the usual island
pleasantries. Hello. Where are you from? Iowa. That was about it.
Later, while we were walking along the old pier, we suddenly heard
someone calling behind us: “IOWA! IOWA!”
They remembered where we were from... apparently not our names.
What followed was one of those wonderfully unexpected island
moments: this photograph of the two of us together on the pier,
turning a tiny encounter into a memory we still treasure.
On a small island, sometimes “Iowa” is all the name you need.
FROM SAINT MARTIN TO MICHIGAN
Sometimes the sea gives something back.
Among the things we found beneath the water was an old piece marked
Dirty Shame Bar — Ada, Mich.
Suddenly this wasn't simply an object from the sea.
It had an address. It had a past.
And eventually, the little piece that somehow made its way from
Michigan to Saint Martin found its story connected back to the place
whose name it still carried.
You never quite know what the Caribbean is going to hand you.
